Tax Questions:
1. Can I settle taxes that are owed?
An Offer in Compromise can be filed to settle a tax debt. This is a formal procedure in which a written offer must be filed along with IRS Financial Statements. The Offer in Compromise must take into account your ability to make payments and the net equity in assets.
2. What can I do if I disagree with the results of an IRS audit or examination?
You have the right to file and request an Appeals Hearing. The case will be assigned to the IRS Appeals Division where you have the right to a hearing before someone that is impartial. If an agreement is not reached, you have the right to file a petition with the United States Tax Court.
3. What can be done if I cannot pay taxes that I owe?
If it is determined that you cannot pay the tax, it is possible to agree to an installment agreement to pay the taxes over a period of time. If it is determined that you do not have the ability to make payments, the IRS can determine that the taxes are currently uncollectible and suspend collection activity.
